On April 28, 2012, Dr. Sara Solomon was honoured to be selected by Paul and Allison Dillett to judge the WBFF Quebec Championships. Sara would like to congratulate every athlete who stepped on stage. As athletes, we experience the power of competition to inspire and motivate. Competition infuses our otherwise standard fitness routines with a higher purpose. When we compete against others, we collectively experience joy, anguish, triumph, and heart-break. This collective experience is the most important reason why we compete. Anyone can train and pursue goals in isolation; however, it is competition that fosters community and human connection.
Fitness is a lifelong commitment. Champions are not made over night. It takes years, many struggles, many triumphs, and even failures. Sara competed 5 times before earning her WBFF PRO card. Along the way, she has met many friends, ameliorated her self-confidence and total body health, and has learned the importance of tenacity.
On August 25, 2012, Sara will be returning to the stage for the 7th time at the WBFF PRO show in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Be sure to read about Sara's journey to the stage in her weekly Oxygen Magazine "Work Train Compete" Blog at www.oxygenmag.com. These blogs feature Sara's tricks for managing a demanding fitness schedule with a hectic career life.

Sara would like to thank the Dilletts for another memorable WBFF experience. She looks forward to returning to both the stage and the judging table later this year.

HEALTHY RECIPE: SARA'S CHOCOLATE AVOCADO DESSERT PUDDING
I know what you are thinking: GROSS-A-LOSSE & VOMIT-INDUCING!!! A dessert made with avocado?? Just trust me on this one! I promise once you try my pudding, you will instantly feel the glow of total joy spreading throughout your body ... otherwise known as entering into a state of "AVOCADOPIA".
1. Slice 1 ripe (ie. mushy) avocado in half, remove the pit. (Note: store unripe avocados on the counter and ripe avocados in the fridge.)
2. Place one half into a bowl, return the other half to the fridge for another day.
3. Mash the avocado in the bowl with a fork until it is smooth and creamy. This represents ~1/3 cup of pureed avocado.
4. Add one scoop of chocolate flavoured whey protein isolate powder (I use Chocolate Flavoured About Time Whey -Zero Carbs!!! - purchase here)
5. Slowly add water while stirring until a creamy pudding consistency is achieved. Blend this with the avocado.
6. Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon, add a scoop of chocolate flavoured stevia powder which can be purchased here, add 1 tsp of raw cacao nibs.
7. Enjoy or refrigerate for later.
Nutritional info (for 1/3 cup pureed avocado and 1 scoop chocolate About Time whey):
calories: 226, fat: 11.2 g, saturated fat: 1.6 g, cholesterol: 1mg, sodium: 46.4m, carbohydrates: 6.5 g, fiber: 5.1 g, sugar: 0.5 g, protein: 26.5 g
Health benefits of avocado:
-Avocado are a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C, K, folate, lutein, and B6. Note that a higher folate intake is associated with a lower risk of heart disease1.
-Avocado can help you lose weight: Half an avocado contains 3.4 grams of fiber (soluble and insoluble: which keeps your digestive system running smoothly). Furthermore, soluble fibre slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in your body, helping you feel full for longer1.
-Avocados also contain oleic acid, a fat that activates the part of your brain that makes you feel full. The oleic acid in avocados also helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels1.
-Avocado can help stabilize blood sugar! Loaded with beneficial monounsaturated fat, avocado slows digestion and helps keep blood sugar from spiking after a meal. A diet high in good fats may even help reverse insulin resistance, which translates to steadier blood glucose levels1.
-Try putting mashed avocado on sandwiches instead of mayonnaise or butter1.
-Prevent your leftover avocado from turning brown by spritzing the flesh with lemon juice. Then wrap it in plastic1.
-An avocado contains 22 g of healthy fats, 3 g of protein, 13 grams of carbs (of which 10 g are fiber!). The 1 g of sugar it contains, mannoheptulose, has a unique chemical structure that actually helps clear glucose from the blood. Rats fed a concentrated form as part of a study became more insulin sensitive and lived 30% longer than the control rats.2

By Jeff O'Connell
Today, one in three adult Americans develops type 2 diabetes or prediabetes—by any definition an epidemic. By providing a thorough investigation into diabetes, interspersed with the author’s personal journey, SUGAR NATION contextualizes the disease from its causes and treatments to how it can be beaten. Jeff O’Connell (formerly of Men’s Health, now editor in chief at Bodybuilding.com) explains the medical side of the disease in accessible terms, sifting through all of the misinformation touted by health care practitioners, drug companies, and food producers, to find his own practical and effective lifestyle solutions. Publishers Weekly calls the work “a smart, personally inspired health wakeup call in no uncertain terms.”
