Canada vs. USA Labelling

Notice identical products have different labelling in Canada vs. the USA.

  • In the USA, 1/2 cup of Fiber 1 has 60 calories.
  • In Canada, 1/2 cup of Fibre 1 has 90 calories.

In the USA, the insoluble dietary fiber calories are subtracted from the total calories. Why? Because in theory, the body doesn't burn insoluble fiber. When fiber is listed as a part of a food's total carbohydrate content, it's counted at 4 Calories per gram, just like all other carbs.
