You may be shocked to discover I only take 1 supplement ... fish oil.
Whole, unprocessed foods are your best source of macro and micronutrients, so if you are eating a well-balanced diet, then supplementation is not required. As always, consult with your physician before taking any supplements.
FISH OIL: Fish oil provides omega-3 fatty acids, which are "anti-inflammatory". You've probably also heard of omega-6 fatty acids, which are "pro-inflammatory". Ideally, we want have a 1:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, but most people's diets tend to have too many omega-6 fats, which is why fish oil is recommended to balance the ratio. A ratio of 1:1 is associated with healthier blood vessels, lower lipid levels, lower risk of diabetes and several forms of cancer*.
Fish oil can:
- promote a healthy nervous system
- protect against heart disease
- support vision and joint health
- maintain optimal brain health
Fish Oil DNA has 300mg Omega-3 fatty acids and is enteric coated (no fishy aftertaste). Store it in the fridge. Note that fish oil is an anticoagulant, so let you doctor and dentist know that you are taking it. If you have an upcoming surgery, your doctor or dentist may ask you to stop taking fish oil 2 weeks before your surgery.
Fish oil can also increase cholesterol*so check with your medical doctor to make sure fish oil supplementation is right for you.
Note that fish oil is not insulinogenic (it has no significant influence on fasting insulin levels), and one pill is only 10 calories, so it technically won’t break your fast. I prefer to take mine during my eating window. Store it in the fridge.
