These are my must-have kitchen gadgets that make it quick and easy to cook smarter and eat healthier:
1. Digital Food and Nutrient Calculator
This is the Rolls Royce of Kitchen Scales. Not only does it measure your food, but it also calculates calories, carbs, fiber, sodium, fats, vitamin K and 6 other nutrients! This scale is a must-have for anyone trying to lose or maintain their weight. ps. Santa... this is what I want for Christmas!
2. Magic Bullet® Blender
I use my Magic Bullet all the time! It's does the job quickly and easily, occupies very little counter space and is dishwasher friendly. I use it to make my healthy salsa, guacamole, pancake batter, chocolate mousse, and protein shakes.
3. 12V Travel Cooler (and Power Adaptor)
This fancy cooler bag can keep your groceries cold when you get stuck in traffic! It plugs into the wall! And that's not all! It also plugs into the cigarette lighter in your vehicle if you also get the Power Adaptor. Perfect for taking your meals on the go (camping, travelling).
4. Natural Peanut Butter Mixer
I love my all-natural peanut butters, but I am not fan of the layer of oil at the top of the jar that splashes everywhere! This fancy gizmo fits a standard 16 oz jar of peanut butter and stirs the peanut butter without splashing the oil.
5. Spice and Nut Grinder
If you watch my YouTube cooking videos, then you have seen me use my Cuisinart Grinder many times! I use it to mix my own spices, which is a much healthier option than using salt to season your food. I also use it to create healthier baking options. For example, I grind my oats and almonds to make oat and almond flour. This is a much healthier option than using refined white flour.
6. Food Processor
I use my food processor all the time! In fact, I have two of them (a big one and a miniature one). I don't know what I would do without them. It's a great tool for quickly chopping your vegetables and for making chicken salad (using boiled chicken), salsa, hummus and guacamole. I like to puree raw peeled zucchini into my chocolate whey protein to make chocolate pudding (and I promise your taste buds won't be able to detect the zucchini!). It's a great way to trick your family into eating more vegetables.
I have this grill and I love it! Regardless of the weather, you can bet I'll be grillin' like a villain. And cleaning up is easy because it's dishwasher friendly.
8. Apple Slicer
Did you know someone invented a gizmo that will allow you to simultaneously core and evenly slice your apples? This is a great tool to use when baking with apples. I like to use it to cut my apples into wedges for snacking because it's extremely efficient. I also recommend this to my patients who have bonding or porcelain veneers on their front teeth to increase the longevity of their dental work.
9. Strawberry Huller
This clever tool removes the leaves and stem from a strawberry while leaving as much fruit as possible. Just insert, twist and pull to remove the stem and hull. If you're a fan of strawberries, then you will love my healthy chocolate dipped strawberries recipe in my Fat Loss Fast 1 eBook. You can also try my Chocolate Stuffed Strawberries Recipe!
10. Avocado Saver
It's unlikely you will eat an entire avocado in one day. The problem with saving the other half is that it turns brown. Never fear! The Avocado Saver will keep it green by reducing the fruit's exposure to the air. Yep, avocado is a fruit!
11. Avocado Slicer and Pitter
Avocado fans rejoice! Finally a gadget that will peel a ripe avocado, remove the pit, and then cut it into uniform slices!
12. Lemon Squeezer
My mother surprised me with this lemon squeezer last year, and I must say, what a treat! This dishwasher-friendly and ergonomic gizmo allows me to season my food with lemon or lime juice effortlessly. Just place half a lemon (or lime) between the press, squeeze the handles et voila! The lemon juice will be extracted onto your food, but the annoying pulp and seeds will be excluded from the extraction.
13.Olive Oil Sprayer
Rather than drench your salad in tons of oil, use an oil mister to lightly spray it over the salad. This will reduce your calorie intake.
14. BPA-Free Shaker Cup
A Shaker Cup is a convenient way to take your protein shakes with you on the go. I never leave home without my whey protein powder and my shaker cup! (I'm a fan of Cyclone Cups. I confess I have 7 shaker cups so I don't have to worry about washing the dishes everyday. In case you are wondering "what is BPA?" and "why is BPA-free important?", then ready my post, "Water Bottles: Is BPA-Free Necessary?"
15. Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer (World Cuisine)
Do YOU LOVE PASTA? Fortunately there are other "pastabilities" thanks to the Spiral Vegetable Slicer! This gizmo effortlessly makes noodles from zucchini (and other vegetables) for veggie pasta. Be sure to try my Pan Seared Scallops on a Bed of Zucchini Noodles Recipe!
16. Pyrex Storage 10-Piece Set
BPA-free Pyrex containers with BPA-free lids are a must for anyone trying to lead a healthy lifestyle. Use them to
- pack your healthy meals on the go
- store your pre-cut and washed veggies and fruits.
17. Vegetable Peeler
I had to buy 3 of these because I use them every single day! I peel zucchini to make my protein puddings and cheesecakes, and I peel my sweet potatoes to make sweet potato fries.
18. Multi Chopper
If you want to eat healthy, then you have to cook with fresh vegetables and fruit. My multi-chopper is the ultimate time-saver because it slices, dices, juliennes, cores, and makes wedges in a matter of seconds.
19. Tovolo Groovy Ice Pop Molds
It's no secret that conventional ice cream bars are loaded with calories, fat, sugar, cholesterol and other offenders. Make your own healthy ice cream bars using ingredients such as whey protein, fruit, unsweetened almond milk and all-natural peanut butter.
20. Digital Steamer
Steaming is one of the fastest ways to prepare vegetables, and with 2 tiers, you can cook an entire meal (fish, vegetables, etc) at once. Compared to other methods of cooking, steaming is the best method for retaining the vitamin and mineral content of vegetables. For a less expensive option, try Ziploc® Zip’n Steam® Microwave Cooking Bags. The BPA-free microwavable bags are ideal for steaming fresh or frozen poultry, potatoes, fish and vegetables. And there is no mess - just toss the bag into the garbage when finished.
21. Knife Set with Block
Quality sharp knives are a must for healthy cooking. Use a chef's knife to dice veggies and to remove visible fat from meat and poultry. Use a paring knife to slice your fruit.
22. Measuring Cups and Spoons
Weight gain is a matter of "calories in" versus "calories out". Measuring cups and spoons help you keep your portions sizes in check. If you want to lose or maintain weight, then measure your food and keep track of your daily food intake; otherwise you will eat more than your allotted portion merely because it is there and because we have been conditioned to by consumerism to eat as much as possible.
23. Nonstick Skillet Set
We all know that slathering our pans with butter isn't good for our waistlines. Rectify this by cooking with non-stick skillets. Whether you are cooking omelettes, pancakes or a chicken vegetable stir-fries, all you need is a very small amount of extra virgin olive, coconut oil or non-stick cooking spray.
24a) Non-Stick Baking Mat
Parchment paper is yesterday's news! Silpat non-stick baking mats are where it's at! They are easy to clean and allow for healthier cooking. Never grease a cookie sheet with butter or oil again! I like to use my Silpat mat to bake sweet potato fries and healthy cookies in the oven.
24b). Reusable Silicone Bakeware
Silicone bakeware has many advantages:
- No need to grease or oil pans
- Even baking - no burnt edges
- Removing baked goods from the pans is very easy: just twist or pull on the sides
- Freezer, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe.
- Lightweight and portable
25. Ice Cream Machine
Have you made guilt-free protein ice cream yet? Download my FREE ice cream e-Book Now! You will die and go to HEAVEN!
26. Springform Pans
If you are a fan of my healthy cheesecake recipes, then non-stick springform pans are a must! A springform pan is a two-piece pan: the sides can be removed and the bottom piece comes out too.
27. Food Dehydrator
This is the most recent addition to my kitchen. I wish I had purchased a food dehydrator years ago! Adhering to a fat-blasting dietary regime is not always easy. So when you get the munchies, don't sabotage your lean gains by scarfing down a bag of potato chips! Instead, you can enjoy your very own homemade kale chips! This is how I make mine: I cut my kale and sprinkle it with Nutritional Yeast Seasoning (which imparts a cheesy flavour) and lemon juice. Three hours later, I have cheesy kale chips!
You should take 20 minutes to eat a meal. Why? When you take your time to slowly chew each mouthful at least 32 times, messages will be sent to your brain indicating you are satisfied. The brain needs about 20 minutes to get this “not hungry anymore” signal. This strategy will make you feel full with less food. I like to eat my food using chopsticks because I am not particularly skilled with them. This forces me to slow down. If you have trouble honing chopstick skills, then try "Fred and Friends TropSticks", or as I like to call them, "cheater chopsticks"!
Preparing healthy meals does not have to be labour-intensive if you have the right tools! The right tools make cooking easier, healthier and FUN! They also make great gifts for your friends, and family... or yourself!
